Nina Anduiza is an American‑born, multi-disciplinary artist of Basque and Cherokee ancestry, based in Brussels.  Her formal training in the arts began at age four at the Houston Ballet School and the Glassell School of Art, continuing at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.  She graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she paired rigorous studio work with studies in the sciences and humanities.

 

Anduiza approaches art as a ritualised, embodied process that mends and elevates the spirit.  She has developed an expressive figural language that addresses psychological experience and interpersonal relationships.  She focuses on the transformative power of love and empathy and on the impact of social violence on our individual and collective lives. 

 

On paper, canvas, and wood, this language speaks through layered drawn lines which flow and fracture by turns, summoning mass, oscillating between abstraction and figuration. 

 

In clay, wax, and bronze, Anduiza builds sculptures with a unique command of chiaroscuro, sculpting in seemingly unruly yet rigorously detailed surfaces which amplify the interplay of light and shadow.  Changing one’s angle of view recalculates that interplay of light and shadow, revolutionising one’s visceral experience of the work.  Waves of vulnerability and power sweep across the planes of the sculpture, revealing the complexity and vitality of the subject. 

 

Anduiza’s oeuvres range from intimate series to over-life‑size pieces which she creates directly in clay, wax, pigmented dry oil, coloured pencil, and graphite.  Her sessions with live models are sustained personal encounters which serve as a basis for form and meaning.  She presents her works in thematic ensembles or installations that have also incorporated her works in video, photography and poetry.

 

She has participated in exhibitions in academic, institutional, and heritage contexts, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Bozar and the European Commission in Brussels, the Craiova Art Museum in Romania, the London Art Biennale, and the Biermans‑Lapôtre Foundation in Paris.  Her work has been recognised with the Melissa Beth Meyers Award, the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation Prize, and the Eben Demarest Trust Award, this last by nomination of the National Sculpture Society and the Menil Collection.

 

In 2024 she co‑founded Atoma Art Center, an independent contemporary art institution in Brussels dedicated to research, creation, production, curation, exhibition, and creative collaboration across disciplines.
